Want Its faster Triathlon Ever? Think like a trucker
In order to have its best race ever, have to think like a trucker.
This statement may sound ridiculous but it has more truth than you think.
For truck drivers to obtain a benefit that should drive their trucks throughout the country as quickly as possible without losing fuel. Long delivery times and excessive fuel costs eat into profits at a tremendous rate.
The triathletes face a similar situation. They have to get from point A to point B quickly without using too much energy (fuel) that is still needed to complete the race - before receiving his benefit (PB).
Method athletes attack this problem by riding a larger gear at a rate lower. Here's how preserve muscle systems necessary for the race. A trained athlete can travel at higher speeds with a lower cadence and a lower heart rate. This part of the equation is very easy to follow.
Now let's get down to the nuts and bolts. Large trucks have a multitude of courses both in the same way your triathlon bike has 18-20 gears. Each team is good in a given situation and absolutely horrible in another.
Truck Driving along 70 mph (113kph) use their march higher in the flat and downhill sections of the road. This gives them the greatest return on your fuel economy.
A triathlete must travel in a similar manner. The caveat here would be that the pace should be manageable at 70-85 rpm (revolutions per minute). pedal stroke should be smooth and rider should not be "mash" the pedals.
So far so good. Let's look at where the majority of triathletes try to put up with a lower cadence failure: the ego gets in the road.
A trucker continuously scroll all the way to ensure that maximizes your fuel (energy) economy. A slight increase in shift up, change of small hills, big hills, changing a little more. Makes perfect sense when we are talking about a large diesel truck, Right?
Same goes for the triathlete. Too much ego leads to not enough change, and that leads to a rapid pace to depletion the race.
It is important to shift your gears to match the terrain you are riding. This will maximize your time and energy. No change on a small hill, allowing its cadence fell below 60 is burning the muscles you will need later for the race. Always changing and increasing the frequency of any hill size.
Think like the driver of the truck.
Truck driver needs to get your rpm to get over the hill without losing too much speed. triathlete must increase its rpm to get over the hill without using too much energy to break the work into small pieces - or high speed.
Truck driver uses a large gear on the flats and down hills to maximize the economy. triathlete must also use a larger gear on the flats and down hills to maximize the economy.
Truck driver makes money when it's time and fuel. Triathlete enters the race in better shape when it is both time-and fuel-efficient.
Truck driver can go from day of Twinkies and coffee. triathlete dreams of the day you can have a Twinkie and coffee.
Traveling with a cadence lower only works if you leave your ego at home and think like a truck driver at the time of change.
