U.S. Open: Graeme McDowell won his first major golf at Pebble Beach, USA

The 30-year-old Northern Irishman Graeme McDowell won yesterday in Pebble Beach to take over U.S. Open golf major and become the first European to win since 1970.

Two months ago, McDowell had not even been among the 50 first in the world and was about to have to qualify for Open bowling Beach and next month in St Andrews.

But McDowell has won his last two starts - Wales Open at Celtic Manor two weeks ago and now the U.S. Open Mayor - and this victory has sent McDowell of 37th to 13th in the world ranking.

In a hard week of scoring in Pebble Beach, McDowell held the challenge of Gregory Havret of France on the final day and won only once the torque level. McDowell fellow contenders see Woods, Phil Mickelson and Ernie Els also witnessed the fight and the third round leader Dustin Johnson all fall apart, with A final round of 11 a day, which left him five shots behind McDowell.

"It was a great day," said McDowell. I stuck to my game plan, I did my job. I bogey at nine and 10 and first had a look at the classification away from 10, and saw that it was two in front.

"I played really well in the last nine holes, made some big changes, hit some nice putts. And I'm sure Greg disappointed - 17 bogey, birdie not the last. "

"I could not believe it. I think I've died and gone to heaven for sure. This can not be really real and I do not think that this will never sink in. "
