Why You Need a Waterproof GPS
If you are in the market for a navigation system, you will need to decide what features are important to you. A waterproof GPS can be critical for many users and helpful for most. Why is this feature so important?
There are various levels of resistance to water known as IPX levels. Lower levels may allow for the unit to get splashed without ill effects while a device with a higher level of protection may be completely submerged for a period of time with no problem. Be sure to make note of the IPX level of the device that you choose so that you can be sure to not expose your purchase to conditions that exceed the ability of the device to withstand.
If you plan to use your device in enclosed spaces such as a car, then you probably aren't worried about the device being submerged. However, you could easily dump a drink on it, or it could get rained on when you open the car door during a storm. Resistance to liquids could save you from having to replace your system.
Do you plan to use the device outdoors? A higher IPX level is in order in this case. Hikers, golfers, bicyclists, motorcyclists, runners, hunters, geocachers and others who could get caught in torrential downpours won't want to be without waterproof GPS navigation. If you are reliant on your device, you will want to take every precaution to make sure that it remains functional so that you are able to find your way to your desired destination. Also, you may not want to cut your excursion short due to bad weather.
For marine GPS systems, the highest levels of protection are necessary since rough water could continually get the unit wet in addition to rain. Your unit could even be tossed overboard. You will want to protect your investment by getting a device that can handle submersion. IPX7 is the common waterproof level for marine use which allows the device to be submerged for up to 30 minutes.
You will find different types of water-resistant devices. Some are handheld, some are watches that can be worn, others are made to be attached to a vehicle or bike, and a few have several ways that they can be taken along like a handheld that also offers the option of mounting in your car.
You can also find cases that are made to be waterproof. However, since you will probably use the device outside of its case, this feature may not protect your device when you need it most if your GPS is not waterproof. A case that resists water can be a great accessory when used in conjunction with a device with a higher IPX level.
A waterproof GPS can be helpful for most users and critical for those who use their device outdoors or on open water. Protect your investment and make sure that you can get to where you are going by purchasing a water-resistant navigation device.
