Most people do not know that there is such a thing as a bike riding technique. This is a biker’s way to avoid muscle strain that may result to injuries or deformation of the body. As we all know, biking is a constant movement that involves a lot of muscle work and body weight. Because of this, some of the muscles, joints and even bones tend to be overused. To avoid such circumstances, a biker needs to know the bike riding technique.

The first and probably the most essential bike riding technique is to flatten your back. To do this, you should lean your upper body forward and your hips in a rotating forward position. In doing this, you could avoid the “biker back” that most bikers steer clear of.

The second bike riding technique is to keep your elbows bent. Many bikers have the wrong notion that locking their arms in place is a good thing. But what they do not know is that this is actually bad for you. What you could do instead is to maintain your arms in a solid position.

The third bike riding technique is not to move your shoulders. Most bikers, especially the amateur ones tend to move their shoulders around thinking that it may lessen the strain. Actually, it does not. It is just a waste of your energy, so instead of swaying your body back and forth, try to minimize your upper body movement.

The fourth bike riding technique is to move your grip often. This way, you could avoid numbness in your hands. This particular technique depends on your riding situation.

The fifth bike riding technique is to keep your head up. This technique actually does two things; one, it helps you stay alert from possible accidents that you may encounter and two, it keeps your neck and back aligned. This way, you are far from accidents and it could prevent strain and discomfort while biking.

The sixth bike riding technique is to keep you feet aligned with the pedal axle. To do this, find the widest part of your feet and put the center of it aligned to the pedal.

The seventh and the last bike riding technique is to move your butt. This may sound funny but moving your butt while on the go puts your different muscles to use and some to rest. Moving your butt forward will do more of your quadriceps and moving backwards will do more for your hamstring.

Even though these bike riding techniques are simple, it could do a lot to you and your body.

    I found this to be a very interesting blog, I never knew that there was a technique to riding a bike, it always seemed so simple until now. Is it advisable to stand up and peddle when you can? I often times see bikers (mainly when going up hill) standing up to peddle, I thought maybe this would fall in to that category of moving your butt when ever you can. It would also move your grip I would think allowing your hands to wake up if they had gone numb. As you said in the beginning of your blog not everyone is privy to these techniques, I know I wasn’t and I appreciate you letting me know. I hope to see more interesting information from you in the near future because the more I can learn before I join my bicycling club the better off I will be.

    These are some great tips for riding your bike I never knew that there was so much to it in order to maximize your exercise efforts and get the most benefits out of riding. Not to mention making it more comfortable for those long rides. The tip that I have the most difficulty with is the flattening your back because my back naturally wants to curve when I lean over the frame of the bike, but I am working on it to get it to work. I will let you know how it goes once I get it down, thank you for posting the proper technique though I will try these as best I can so I can ride longer during my vacation.

    The bike riding strategy is to not move your shoulders. Most bikers, especially the amateur ones tend to transfer their own shoulder muscles about believing that it may decrease the stress. Actually, it doesn’t. It’s really a misuse of energy, so rather than swaying your entire body back and forth, try to reduce your own chest muscles movement.

    Riding a bike technique is to maneuver your butt. This could appear interesting but moving the sofa while on appropriate puts your unique muscle to use and some to rest. Moving your butt forward will do more of your own quadriceps as well as shifting in reverse will do more for your hamstring muscle.
