What is at the rear wheel axle of a bicycle that makes it stop the bike when the rider pedals backwards?

I can not remove the wheel because I do not suppose I have the tools to do so. I want to carry out this function of the bike so you can become a unicycle. if anyone has any good Web sites that undoubtedly would be appreciated.
