Should I buy a commodity or a mountain bike?

I was thinking about buying a bike, probably from Wal Mart, just to ride probably to school and work. I doubt I'll go off road a lot since there are not many ways or anything around where I live. I was thinking either a mountain bike or a comfort bike. Someone knows it would be better? About the living area has many steep hills, I'm not sure if that changes the type bike you should get.

The bike is the bike power X wost could buy to commute with and the second is not very good. Do you want a bike with 700c wheels and suspension. Find a store quality used bikes in the local ebay or Craig's List first. If you can not find one this bike is much better to switch on.
