Creaking noise in carbon fiber bike?
I have a 1 year old Racing carbon fiber frame with Campy Chorus components, including a crank carbon. My bike used to be dead quiet, but standing up now I hear a crack in the bottom of the pedal. The noise that occurs at the bottom of both the left and right pedal. I do not think that comes from the tacos, it sounds like it comes from the structure. Any idea how to isolate the noise and quiet? These are the cranks ultratorque, so does not have the older style square tapered spindle. Ultratorque uses a hollow tubular spindle and 2-piece design. Nothing in the game for some cranks.
Yes ... bottom bracket is the first place to look. Sometimes they loosen hard-boot ..... Often, all you have to do is remove, grease, and torque properly. In some carbon bikes, the bottom bracket can be released from the link .... in that case, you look for in a new frame (hopefully under warranty, even if outside the period warranty), or living with the crunch. If everything seems fine, but still creaks, some people have good luck with Teflon tape wrap some plumber cup around the threads, or apply some loctite. Another common cause is loose cranks. Grease axle and bolts mounting surfaces (and the shoulder of the handle that is against the surface of the shaft or bearing), and tighten the screws to specifications. While you're at it, make sure the screws are tightened the dishes .... take fat out and up if you want (outside of the screws and surfaces of the spider / rings). If those do not fix it and the pedals seem good, it is may smear a little bit of fat on the surface Creek pedal. Some pedals (especially those with strips of aluminum surfaces) creak a little time as lead. Take a look at your shoes, also make ..... the bolts are tightened and examine the plant plugs any cracks. Do not overlook things like freak the headset, cable housing and ferrules seat tube. All these can crack and travel through frame making it seem like they're coming from somewhere else. If you have a carbon seatpost, the use of carbon fiber paste special preparation ..... not normal fat. Any pro bike shop will have it and probably a little smears for free. Hope this helps ....
