help with mtb handlebars / stem?

I have a gt mountain bike, the mother is at a fixed angle slopes and the bars have a slight curve, the bike fits me perfectly. my problem is that I think are of poor quality and look cheap. stalks my friends seem to be less than mine, but the bars are larger curves a lot, I want to change the stem and bars, but if I get a lower stem that I have to get a couple of these bars higher? to feel the same as before? please Bike someone with knowledge please help
